I leave tomorrow for the Marshall Islands

I’ll be there for all of winter term (2 1/2 months) and during that time I will have very limited internet access. I won’t be posting on tumblr very much, if at all.

Have a great winter, everyone!

My issue with science fiction

tripsblairattack:

Why is it that in most science fiction extraterrestrial creatures usually seem to resemble generic humanoids, with bipedal forms, hands, fingers and heads?

Because it’s easier for human actors to portray humanoid creatures. And because it’s easier for human audiences to sympathize with human-looking creatures than with slug-like creatures. From a scientific standpoint, it is indeed unlikely that so many extraterrestrial life forms are as similar to humans as portrayed in the movies, but from a narrative and practical standpoint, it makes some sense. This is not to say that movies featuring non-humanoid alien protagonists would be uninteresting, but it would be harder for audiences to make an emotional connection to the characters, which is a risk not many films are willing to make. That sort of alien is better saved for more cerebral science fiction literature, which can target a smaller audience since books do not need to make nearly as much money as feature films to be successful.

“Casey: I think maybe I am going to quit.
Henry: You should do it. I’m a quitter. It’s fun.
NotLogan Echolls: Sorry, one last thing. Nobody ever accomplished anything by quitting. Now what if Ronald Reagan quit?
Casey: Quit acting? He did.
Henry: That’s actually where I got the idea.”

“Henry: I thought I’d go for the helpful, gay pirate kind of thing.
Casey: Aww, you don’t look helpful.
Ron: Actually, I learned this at the sensitivity seminar, that we do not use that word. Okay. I mean, I’m not, but we, we don’t know who may be …
Casey: A pirate?
Henry: Helpful?
Ron: … Gay.”

I bought a bikini today. It’s the first I’ve ever owned. It’s silly, because I got over my old body image issues a long time ago, but I still had this lingering unwillingness to show my stomach, this idea that I wasn’t good enough to wear a bikini. I decided today that was enough of that kind of thinking. Even if no one ever sees me in it, it feels oddly empowering to finally own a bikini.
