Fun story about this shirt: I own this shirt, and I used to joke with my friends that if anyone were to ever recognize it as a Battlestar shirt, I would make out with them on the spot. It was never a serious claim, just a way of illustrating the point that I am very attracted to geeks. But then, one day, a guy in one of my classes said he liked my BSG shirt. I hooked up with him that night.

Party Down

I just started watching this show and it is pretty great.

And, to make things even better, it is absolutely filled with Veronica Mars alums. Not the presence of Dick Casablancas* and Vinnie Van Lowe** in the photo above. And Rob Thomas is one of the creators.

I can’t believe this show isn’t eating up all the comedy awards. If Jane Lynch doesn’t win that Golden Globe (admittedly for another show, but still) there will be blood.

I can believe it, because it’s on Starz and television awards have a history of rewarding the same handful of shows over and over again, regardless of what is actually good. But it’s still a shame, because Party Down is wonderful. I can’t decide whether I like Jane Lynch better in Glee or in Party Down, but either way she deserves all the awards she gets.

She mentions a Shakespeare play AND the Scarlet Letter, people. It’s a legitimate song for this blog. LE-GIT, I say!

But she gets her allusions wrong! Romeo and Juliet are TRAGIC! They don’t get married at the end! They DIE. And “I was a scarlet letter”? I do not think that means what you think it means. Also, comparing your lover to Reverend Dimmesdale is not very flattering, as his main character trait is being weak.

At least she’s still got “You Belong With Me”.

I watched Battlestar Galactica: The Plan last night. I enjoyed it quite a bit - it was like being reunited with friends I hadn’t seen in a while and it reminded me why I liked the show so much in the first place. There wasn’t much that was really new, but it went over a lot of events from the series from the cylons’ perspective, which I loved because the cylons are one of my favorite parts of the show. There were some good bits with Anders leading the resistance on Caprica, Leoben starting to become obsessed with Starbuck, Boomer losing it (poor, poor Boomer), a Simon marrying a human, and Six being awesome, as usual. Plus lots and lots of Cavil being a magnificent bastard. Also, there was also a retread of one of my favorite lines of the series: “No more Mr. Nice Gaius”!

I watched A Streetcar Named Desire for the first time yesterday, and I’m in the middle of reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles (admittedly haven’t finished yet), and I’ve got to say: just those two have made me so tired of stories about shallow, stupid women who happen to be “fascinating” because of their extreme beauty, as written by men. They’re not that interesting.

In fact, I probably would have actually liked A Streetcar Named Desire were Blanche ever so slightly less utterly repulsive. She’s not even repulsive in an interesting way, like the mythological figure Medea or video of surgery; she’s just a dumb narcissist and I could not give a damn.

Ugh, Tess of the D’Urbervilles. It’s such a boring book, thanks partly to the fact that Tess is about as interesting as a pile of rocks. And while I certainly feel sorry for her and appreciate the book’s women-shouldn’t-be-blamed-for-their-own-rape message (how progressive!), couldn’t the same message have been delivered with a slightly more engaging heroine? One who occasionally showed some initiative? Or was even marginally intelligent? Or one with emotions other than sad and in love, which seem to be the only allowable ones for heroines in classic literature (well, those and BEING TRAGIC, which isn’t an emotion, but ought to be when Tess is involved)? How about a heroine who sometimes got angry? Why are so many classic male authors so terrible at writing believable female characters?

I have to disagree about A Streetcar Named Desire, though. Blanche is certainly beautiful and shallow, but there’s a lot more to her than just that. Underneath her vapid exterior, she’s quite clever. She’s doomed and she knows it, and that’s interesting.

And even if you don’t like the story of A Streetcar Named Desire, you can always spend the film ogling young Marlon Brando. Hot damn!

why would “Veronica Mars” have this reference? oh yeah, b/c it’s awesome!

This was the episode that also had a sly reference to TWOP (a poster behind V that said “Teenage Women of Propriety”). It was also a generally bad episode. Which is sad.
